Review on Truffles Brasserie

Truffles Restaurant & Bistro is set in the ancient Somerset town of Bruton on the River Brue, seven miles south-east of Shepton Mallet. This charming period cottage started life as a group of weavers cottages and was an award winning restaurant until it unfortunately closed. It has been given a new lease of life by current owners Richard and Barbara Sorapure, who re-opened the restaurant in August 2012 after a sympathetic makeover. Hard work and dedication has won them a silver at the prestigious Taste of the West 2013 Awards. Spread over two floors this is a family run operation, with son Simon as Restaurant Manager ensuring that a pleasing relaxed atmosphere prevails.

Head Chef Carney Robinson draws on keenly sourced local ingredients, with seafood and fish arriving daily from suppliers in Dorset and Devon for a crowd pleasing menu of carefully prepared rustic French dishes. Typically you might choose from the a la carte menu a starter of terrine of foie gras served with roast fig compote or Cuisses de grenouilles Provençale, frogs legs in a garlic crumb with lemon. While main courses embrace dishes in the shape of venison steak with a damson and game sauce, pomme parisien and vegetable garnish or black truffle and duck egg tart with watercress sauce and ratatouille gratinée. There's tempting desserts to finish the show with strawberry pavlova or maybe tarte tatin. Lunchtimes Truffles offers an excellent value fixed price menu, together with daily specials featured on the board.

To complement the dishes there's a carefully crafted French wine list featuring a good selection predominantly from the Loire, Bordeaux and Burgundy wine growing regions of France, with some options available by the half bottle and glass.

There's a cosy intimacy about this likeable neighbourhood restaurant, which once more has become a very popular dining feature of the Somerset scene.
