Review on The Ickworth Hotel & Restaurant
Ickworth House was home to the Hervey family for more than 200 years before the whole estate (including 1,800 acres of parkland) was gifted to the National Trust in 1956. The hotel occupies the east wing of the grandiose mansion â€" a spectacular and truly idyllic setting for a country retreat.
Foodwise, visitors have a choice of three options. Fine dining is centred on Fredericks Restaurant (the original family dining room), where the kitchen deals in robust modern European cooking, along the lines of ballotine of sea trout, hot foie gras and tiger prawns, Gressingham duck cassoulet with haricot beans and tomato, and bitter chocolate marquise with local berries.
Alternatively try the buzzy Mediterranean Café Inferno in the old kitchens (just the place for café latte and biscotti or a home-baked pizza); otherwise, chill out on the Conservatory and contemplate the vistas with a plate of cucumber sandwiches and a pot of Earl Grey tea by your side.
