Review on Columbine Restaurant
Kim and Steve McNally's popular local restaurant Columbine, occupies a Georgian house behind the King's Head Hotel, within striking distance of Buxton's renowned opera house. It caters equally well for show-goers in a hurry (booking essential) and those wanting to linger. Billed as a 'Licensed Restaurant with Cellars', it is spread over two floors, with the bonus of dining in the subterranean vaults of the building.
The kitchen makes a virtue of generosity ('portions here are large'), but Steve McNally knows his onions. Dishes are pulled together from lots of different sources, so you might find crab and salmon rissoles or haunch of venison with braised venison sausage, buttons onions and garlic mash sharing the bill with lamb dupiaza and minted yoghurt or fillet of wild sea bass with stir-fried noodles, ginger and spring onions.
To finish, you can simply order 'biscuits' or have something more elaborate like caramelised pear and apple mille-feuille. The wine list relies on well-known names, and prices are very affordable.
