Review on The Crooked Well
The Crooked Well is a very welcome addition to Camberwell in tree lined Grove Lane, a short stroll from Denmark Hill Station. This light and airy venue has been stylish transformed with comfortable furnishings with an inviting bar, ideal for a leisurely drink or a quick snack and a more formal dining area. It is co-owned by Hector Skinner and Matt Green-Armytage, the former looks after the restaurant, while Matt mans the stoves. Between them they have garnered considerable experience with Hector setting up award-winning Brighton Hotel du Vin, time spent at Petrus, as well as four years at Babylon, Roof Gardens. Matt has also spent time at Hotel du Vin in Tunbridge Wells, Brighton and Winchester, as well as climbing the culinary ladder at two-starred Michelin Le Gavroche, where he learnt more traditional cooking techniques in one of the most renowned kitchens.
The restaurant has a relaxed vibe for Matt's menu which offers British food with continental influences, including gastropub classics alongside exotic game and fish dishes. Opt for warm pigs head terrine, caramelised apple and scratchings or crisp salt and pepper baby squid and olive oil dressing amongst the starters. Main courses take in stone bass, mussel linguini, olive tapenade and coriander cress or maybe choose roast venison, braised red cabbage, celeriac puree, white pudding and jus. There are some tempting desserts to close the show with poached pear and almond cake paired with vanilla ice cream, or a decadent hot chocolate pudding, salted caramel ice cream and Chantilly cream for sharing.
There is a well put together wine list offering good value with options available by the glass or small flask. Staff who have previously worked with Hector and Matt are friendly and very knowledgeable and this great neighbourhood destination is a sure winner.
