Review on Craigard House Hotel
A recently converted Victorian mansion overlooking Campeltown Loch at the foot of the Kintyre peninsula, Craigard House still shows some of its distinctive Italianate style although it is now better known for its family hospitality and good food.
Due to its current popularity, there are plans to extend the restaurant that forms a focal point of the hotel. Close contact with local suppliers ensures a steady stream of seafood, meat and game, which the kitchen puts to good use. To start, there might be crab and ginger spring rolls or a 'tower' of haggis, neeps and tatties, while mains might feature a roast, savoury meatballs with spaghetti, beef Stroganoff or braised lamb shank on mustard mash.
It's also worth checking out the lengthy list of daily seafood specials, which might range from Gigha squat lobsters in lemon, ginger and garlic butter to seared scallops with fresh apple, basil and chilli dressing. Round off with tangy rhubarb crumble, lush Arran ice creams or tiramisu.
