Review on Royal China
The gang of five that now makes up the Royal China group straddles the capital, the Westferry Circus branch in the heart of Canary Wharf has a pleasant outdoor seating area, but otherwise it goes for the signature décor of lacquered wooden walls painted in shiny black, motifs of golden birds in flight and stylised decorative silver waves.
Dim sum are one of the highpoints and the kitchen can produce some of the most imaginative and skilfully wrought morsels in the business. The range is extensive, from steamed pork dumplings with shrimps and curried squid to fried yam paste with dried meat and vegetarian spring rolls. Desserts are intriguing, likewise the list of daily specials: anything from baked buns with tuna to the dauntingly titled ‘double-boiled snowfield frog’s spawn with medlar’!
The full menu is a Cantonese whopper, taking in esoteric appetisers like sliced lobster with fresh fruit salad or slivers of preserved pork knuckle with jellyfish, a host of familiar items (from steamed sea bass with ginger and spring onions to beef with chilli and black bean sauce) and a challenging assortment of 'chef's favourites' including oyster and beancurd hot pot and steamed Icelandic cod with dried yellow beans.
