Review on The Labworth
Designed and built in the 1930s by a firm with links to the Sydney Opera House, the Labworth is a striking Grade II-listed building that dominates Canvey Island and provides a marvellous vantage point for uninterrupted views of the Thames estuary.
Billed as a restaurant and beach bistro, this distinctively shaped, island oasis comes complete with modernist features, big rectangular windows and a cylindrical bar topped with a water feature. Breakfasts and light lunches are served in the bistro, when the menu ranges from 'full English' to pasta, salads, fish and chips and other family favourites.
The restaurant comes into its own during the evening, when the kitchen ups its game for wide-ranging international favourites along the lines of garlic mushroom mille-feuille, poached salmon with spinach and cheese sauce, roast rack of lamb and banoffee Pavlova.
