Review on The Oarsman Bar & Cafe
The arrival of brothers Tom and Ronan Maher in 2002 signalled a new era in the life of this colourful upbeat hostelry, which now manages to please all-comers with its blend of casual food, drink and live music.
Lunch is a relatively straightforward affair, with tortilla wraps, ‘pitta pockets’ and trendy salads bolstered by organic pasta, burgers and char-grilled steaks on toasted ciabatta bread; after that, expect homemade ice creams, cheesecake or white and dark chocolate terrine with coconut cookies.
More formal restaurant-style meals are served in the upstairs dining room three evenings a week, when the kitchen offers the likes of seared scallops and chorizo with cauliflower purée, tomato and oregano dressing ahead of char-grilled fillet of beef with caramelised sweet potatoes, creamed leeks and roast shallot jus. To finish, go for something sweet like Baileys cappuccino mousse with chicory and espresso anglaise or delve into the first-rate selection of Irish cheeses from Sheridan’s.
