Review on Castle Inn
It's been called ' the village that time forgot'. Castle Combe still looks as if the centuries have passed it by: there are no street lights or TV aerials and every building has a 'listed' tag - no wonder film crews are always turning up. Holding pride of place at the centre of things is the ancient, creeper-clad Castle Inn, which can trace its ancestry back to the Middle Ages.
Formal meals are served in the elegant surroundings of Oliver's Restaurant - named after Cromwell, who once took refuge in the Castle. The cooking is tried-and-tested international stuff, with much flambéeing at the table. Expect dishes like chicken liver pâté with Calvados jelly, rack of lamb with Cumberland sauce and roast whole sea bass stuffed with fresh herbs and lemon, followed by toffee and pecan roulade or raspberry shortcake gâteau.
