Review on Hunan
Put yourself in the hands of chef/proprietor Mr Peng when you visit Hunan. There are no printed menus in this unassuming Pimlico Chinese restaurant: you simply discuss any preferences, dislikes or aversions and then leave the kitchen to do the rest.
The result is a procession of tasting dishes – perhaps as many as 20 – brought out at such an orderly pace than feasts can last up to two hours. And don't expect anything in the way of rice or noodles to bulk out the food or distract the palate.
Spicy delicacies from the province of Hunan in the south-west of China are the business. Steamed pork and yam cakes, Chinese style roast beef, clear broths of minced pork and ginger served in a bamboo tube, crisp cuttlefish balls, tempura-style French beans, black-cooked pork belly with preserved vegetables – the list goes on and on, and there's always something new or unexpected to delight diners. Drink tea or one of the accessible French or Italian wines.
