Review on The Daffodil
For 40 years this was a cinema, and the beautifully renovated room still echoes with the old magic of the movies. Sweeping staircases lead from the chic, Art Deco auditorium up to the mezzanine bar; there are giant projectors in place, old film reels on display and photos of legendary screen idols all around.
Daffodil is ‘the hottest restaurant in Cheltenham’, according to Sophie Grigson (writing in the Independent on Sunday). It certainly puts on quite a show, and visitors are treated to a sharp modern brasserie menu that rings the changes every few weeks.
Lunch and dinner are very similar in style, with curtain raisers like confit of duck on leek tarte Tatin and sautéed cucumber noodles or pressed carrot and beetroot terrine ahead of marlin steak on a warm salad of crayfish, salsify and forest mushrooms or corn-fed chicken breast with Provençal vegetables on a smoked paprika rösti. To close the show, try sticky toffee pudding with bannoffi ice cream or white chocolate and orange pannacotta. The wine list is an appealing assortment of around 40 fairly priced bins; live jazz is an added attraction on Monday evenings.
