Review on Prithvi Restaurant
Situated in the heart of the affluent Spa town of Cheltenham, Indian restaurant Prithvi, which takes its name from the ancient Sanskrit translation meaning Mother Earth, opened its doors in February 2012. The unassuming facade gives no indication to the refined elegance of the restaurant inside, with soft ambient lighting, pale walls adorned with artwork and tables dressed in crisp napery, gleaming silver and glassware.
This is no ordinary curry house, dishes are cooked to order using the finest ingredients, resulting in a raft of tempting dishes that have their roots in Indian tradition, whilst employing modern techniques. Owner Jay Ahmed who has previously worked in a number of award-winning restaurants around Birmingham, including the Michelin-starred Purnell's was delighted when Prithvi was named the third best Indian restaurant in Britain, according to review website Tripadvisor. It has rapidly become a crowd-puller for its well presented dishes that could kick off with a starter of Tandoor baked salmon, chilli mango and honey mustard or spiced minced lamb, smoked lamb fillet, and chilli coriander chutney. Main courses are equally tempting with monkfish, tumeric, seasonal vegetables, mustard seed and coconut jus or slow cooked canon of beef and braised parsnips, finishing with a dessert of cinnamon-spiced apple and toffee macaroon. As well as the a la carte menu, there's a five course taster menu, Tour of Prithvi which is available for the whole table.
