Review on Les Frères Jacques
A bastion of old-school French cooking for a good many years, Jean-Jacques Caillabet's likeable restaurant occupies a prime spot right by the Olympia Theatre. The kitchen makes good use of Irish produce - especially seafood – for a short menu in the bourgeois tradition.
Blue lobsters are kept in tanks, oysters are from Clew Bay and there's often Wicklow lamb on the menu (perhaps served with a Provençal crust and mushroom fricassée). Other possibilities might include confit of duck with potatoes cooked in goose fat, roast Atlantic turbot with shrimp and ginger butter, and classic desserts such as Grand Mariner crêpes with banana mousse or apple tartlet with rum and raisin ice cream. Cheeses are from France and Ireland and the lengthy wine list is naturally peppered with the French classics, although other countries do get a look in.
