Edinburgh saw the opening of the Timberyard restaurant in the summer of 2012, a short stroll from the Castle and within easy reach of all the city's major hotels and landmarks. Owners Andrew and Lisa Radford are no strangers to the hospitality industry, they used to own the two popular Atrium and Blue restaurants, and you may recognise the Gubi chairs salvaged from these previous ventures. Located in the premises that used to be Lawson's Timber Yard, the Victorian building originally a prop store for the Royal Lyceum Theatre has been transformed into a smart, trendy dining venue, retaining its warehouse feel with many of the original features and salvaged material.

It is very much a family run operation with son Jo assisting with the management and in charge of the bar, daughter Abi responsible for social media and photography and eldest son Ben heading the kitchen. As well as recently working at St John's in London, Ben and his kitchen team have honed their skills in many of Scotland's top restaurants including Monachyl Mhor and Andrew Fairlie.

The focus is squarely on high quality ingredients carefully sourced from trusted local artisan growers, breeders, producers and foragers, many of which are listed on their website. Open your account with seared scallop, apple, bacon and watercress before a main course of juniper branch roast venison, red cabbage, parsnip, shallot and beetroot or Scrabster hake, smoked mussels, Jerusalem artichokes, spinach and fennel. To finish there are tempting desserts such as baked lemon sponge paired with creme fraiche sorbet or maybe crab apple and shipwreck cider brandy parfait.

There is an eclectic global wine list including an excellent British selection, with many available by the glass, together with tasty brews by Black Isle, Williams Brothers, The Kernel & Innis & Gunn.

In winter the restaurant is cosy with wood burning stoves and in summer you can dine al fresco in the courtyard on their salvaged early Wimbledon Tennis Club chairs.
