Review on Two Fat Ladies at The Buttery
The team behind the Two Fat Ladies recently took over the Buttery on Argyle Street - one of Glasgow's most legendary gastronomic addresses. Echoes of a world long-gone still pervade this enduring institution in a quiet backwater of the city. Little has changed over years and its new incumbents aren't about to rock the boat: the place still feels lavishly old-fashioned, with its stained glass, dark oak panelling, curlicues and all - not forgetting the wonderful mahogany and marble bar.
Modern seafood cookery is the order of the day (as it is in TFL's other restaurants), with much of the catch from Scottish waters. Tian of Orkney crab comes with avocado and Bloody Mary jelly, seared hand-dived scallops are paired with Stornoway black pudding, crispy Parma ham and wild mushroom cream, and fillets of sea bass are given exotic treatment with yellow lentil, prawn and okra curry sauce. Perthshire venison, rack of lamb and fillet of Mey Estate beef please the carnivores.
TFL also recently opened the Shandon Belles - a separate restaurant in the basement of the Buttery. This all-day venue (12.00 - 10.00pm Mon-Sat) specialises in the kind of honest home-style cooking that has made the Ladies famous.
