Review on The Hat and Tun
This entrenched City boozer in the heart of Hatton Garden's jewellery quarter is the seventh member of Tom & Ed Martin's ever-growing pub stable. It's a newly renovated Victorian building that attracts a motley crew of journos, diamond dealers and assorted professionals, who lap up the revamped surroundings (wood-panelled walls, red leather armchairs and an open fire) and revel in the no-nonsense retro pub food.
Weekday lunches are the main event, when the kitchen sends out plates of pie, mash and liquor, hot salt beef sandwiches on rye, triple pork sausages and genuine ploughman's pared down to the essentials. Snackers can go for Scotch eggs with HP sauce, pork pie and piccalilli or a plate of oysters, while apple pie or chocolate tart satisfy any sugar cravings. This is a world away from gastropub - and none the worse for it. Prices are mind-bogglingly low, with virtually nothing over £8.
Note that the Hat and Tun is only open Monday-Friday, with evening fodder limited to a few bar snacks.
