Review on The Mercer Restaurant & Bar
What was the wild and wacky Ballroom Bar on Threadneedle Street has been transformed into The Mercer Restaurant & Bar, a swish-looking destination for local City and media types, who pack the place for power lunches, post-work cocktails and evening get-togethers. Mighty black columns catch they eye and the dining room is dramatically lit by cool white lights.
Britain rules on the menu, and the kitchen conjures up a taste of the past with the likes of chicken and ham broth with pearl barley, potted Yorkshire ham hock with piccalilli, and roast leg of Cornish lamb with duck fat potatoes and minted peas. There are also a few more on-trend ideas (haunch of Highland venison with truffled artichoke, Granny Smith and cashews), plus a few interlopers from the Med (say, baked fillet of sea bass with with braised lentils and fennel).
Grills - from calf's liver to saddle of wild boar - also feature, while daily specials take a trip down memory lane (corned beef hash on Monday, chicken, ham and leek pie on Thursday), and desserts bring on Queen of Puddings, lemon tart and Pimms fruit jelly with apple sorbet. An upper-crust City-oriented wine list offers around 40 prime tipples by the glass.
