Review on Royal Exchange Grand Café & Bar
One of the City's great landmarks, originally built in 1565, the amazingly beautiful Royal Exchange (now a shopping mall) must rank as one of the most elegant spaces of its kind in the capital.
On the ground floor of the courtyard there's an attractive seafood bar with all the familiar Conran design trademarks. Here you can indulge in oysters and caviar (washed down with Champagne, of course), or choose from the selection of piscine delights on the full menu.
Dressed Cornish crab, gravlax and seared tuna niçoise are typical light offerings, and there are also a few more substantial dishes ranging from toasted Scilly Isles lobster and crustacea sandwiches with pea shoot salad or Thai-baked sea bass in a banana leaf to corn-fed chicken and cep pie. To finish, go for warm chocolate fondant or Pimm's mint and cucumber jelly.
If you fancy a drink, head for the sleek Threadneedle and Cornhill lounge bars above the shops at mezzanine level. Sip glamorous cocktails and graze on early-evening tapas.
