Review on Eco
The name Eco has nothing to do with green issues - in fact it's a reference to Italian highbrow writer Umberto Eco, but there's nothing high-minded about the food at this well-liked populist pizzeria on Clapham High Street. Independently run by father and daughter Sami and Charmaine Wasif, it's a boisterous modern venue with rows of tables and an open-kitchen at one end.
Pizzas (thin-crusted 12-inchers) are of course the mainstays and they come in more than 20 varieties from classic Margherita to porcini with fontina, white wine and truffle oil. Folded calzone and pizza bread sandwiches are also highly popular (try the version packed with Parma ham, rocket and avocado). The kitchen also sends out big healthy salads, along with pasta and a handful of grills such as marinated salmon with artichokes, fennel, spinach and fresh herbs. Finish off with raspberry pannacotta or tiramisu. A second branch is now open at 144 Chiswick High Road, W4.
