Review on Tsunami
Clapham railway sidings might seem an unlikely setting for a sleek contemporary Japanese restaurant, but Tsunami is full of surprises. The cool interior with its funky minimalist design attracts a fashionable crowd, the mood is totally relaxed and the food aims for high art with some splashes of fusion.
The kitchen deals in top-end sashimi (including yellow tail with jalapeńo, coriander and ponzu sauce and 'sun-kissed salmon' seared in hot olive oil), plus innovative versions of tempura, salads, teriyaki and the like. Browse the list of appetisers for nasu goma (grilled baby aubergine with sesame sauce or try the 'oyster shooter' (with saké, ponzu, momishi orishi, quail's egg and scallion). Moving on there are 'toban' (clay pot) dishes and a host of specials ranging from duck breast with hoisin miso on a bed of green beans to Scotch fillet steak with sea urchin, foie gras butter and wasabi pepper sauce.
Sushi appears at the end of the menu, with luxurious items such as lobster and avocado maki with crisp tempura flakes on the outside, as well as eel, smelt eggs, grilled salmon skin and snow crab in various guises. Beers and cocktails supplement the list of wines and sakés. A sister restaurant is now open called Yama Momo in East Dulwich.
