Review on Burkes Bar & Restaurant
John J. Burke (‘old JJ’) was the founding father of this legendary Galway bar: he bought Gable House in 1922 and forged a reputation for fine hospitality and community spirit which has been passed down through the generations. These days, the place is still famed for its genuine welcome, unique Irish atmosphere, live music and no-frills food and drink.
On the food front, lunchtime visitors are treated to unadorned pub grub, roasts, fruit tarts and the like. In the evening, the kitchen gets to work on locally sourced produce for a raft of dishes ranging from a near-legendary version of Irish stew to warm goats’ cheese on couscous with apricot salsa, monkfish with garlic and fillet of pork stuffed with nuts and dates. Round it all off with bannoffi pie or assorted ice creams in a brandy snap basket.
