Review on Quince & Medlar
Colin and Louisa Le Voi have spent more than 15 years promoting the cause of vegetarian food in the Lake District and even now they are always on hand in this charming and rather elegant little restaurant.
Don't expect much in the way of groovy trappings or veggie clichés here: instead the setting is a genteel Georgian town house close to Cockermouth Castle, done out with rich floral wallpaper, deep-blue window dressings and lacy tablecloths.
Their dishes are always interesting and well away from the heavy stodge that often passes for vegetarian food. Here you might find fresh ideas aplenty and lots of global ingredients jostling for attention on the plate. Lebanese coconut pancakes could be accompanied by roast butternut squash and chilli, lentil and apricot strudel comes with wilted spinach, while a combo of crushed parsnips with Basmati and wild rice is topped with cheese and pecan nuts then served with leeks and avocado in a white wine sauce.
As a finale, try something like chocolate orange pie or brown bread ice cream with toffee and nutmeg sauce. To go with the food, the owners have put together an intriguing, 100% organic wine list with very reasonable prices.
