Review on Royal Hotel

Queen Victoria bestowed the regal moniker on this old coaching inn, which nestles in the centre of Comrie amid the splendour of Strathearn and the Perthshire highlands. Current owners have transformed it into a delightful little luxury hotel, with polished floors, antiques and stylish furnishings.

Meals can be enjoyed in the lounge bar, conservatory-style brasserie and the library, although pride of place goes to the food served in the elegantly appointed restaurant. The kitchen delivers straightforward modern food with a good showing of locally sourced produce. Starters of warm goats' cheese salad with toasted croute might give way to loin of pork glazed with wild mushroom gratin or fillet of sea bass with a rösti and butter sauce. To conclude, consider rice pudding with spiced plum compote or pannacotta with sweet pear mulled in red wine and spices.
