Review on Black Bull
Sitting in the shadow of 'Old Man' mountain, this historic white-painted Lakeland inn has been providing sustenance and hospitality for more than 400 years, and still has bags of character: take a look at 'The Big Toe of the Old Man', a large piece of stone set into the wall of the residents' lounge.
The pub has a growing reputation for its food, and you can enjoy anything from a toasted sandwich or jacket potato in the bar at lunchtime to a full meal in the restaurant. Starters such as mushrooms in garlic, cream and white wine sauce or chicken liver pâté could be followed by, say, a 10-ounce platter of Cumberland sausage, fillets of Esthwaite trout or crispy roast duckling with fruit sauce.
There's always a dish of the day, plus a choice of salads and desserts ranging from hot Cumbrian plum pudding to double fudge chocolate gâteau.
Behind the pub are the workings of the award-winning Coniston Brewing Company and you can sample the full range of its beers in the bar.
