Review on Ardagh Hotel's Clifden Seafood Restaurant
Monique and Stephane Bauvet's restful hotel stands in a lovely spot by the shores of Ardbear Bay just three miles from 'the capital on Connemara'. From the outside, Ardagh looks quite modern, although the interior strikes a more traditional, homely note with rustic colour schemes, comfortable sofas and turf fires smouldering in the grate.
The restaurant occupies the first floor and naturally boasts magnificent sea views as well as spectacular sunsets. Home-grown organic vegetables always feature on the menu, along with locally reared meat and seafood; lobsters are kept in tanks of sea water and they might be simply grilled or poached and served with basil mayonnaise.
Otherwise, roast rack of Connemara mountain lamb appears with roasted celeriac mash, red wine, rosemary and thyme, while baked fillet of Atlantic hake is topped with Champagne and garden herb sauce. Desserts have included yoghurt ice cream with forest fruits, and the wine list has a strong showing of classic French bottles plus some good drinking from South Africa.
