Review on Owenmore Restaurant, Ballynahinch Castle

A majestic location beside the banks of the famous Ballynahinch River has ensured that this baronial mansion has become a must-visit destination for serious salmon fishermen. The crenellated castle is at the heart of the estate, surrounded by 450 acres of ancient woodland, lakes, landscaped grounds and terraced gardens overlooking the water.

The Owenmore restaurant enjoys splendid panoramic views and makes a pleasing setting for Pete Durkan's cleverly worked food. He seeks out local produce avidly and buys organic where possible. Game from the estate is a seasonal star turn, likewise wild salmon from the river (perhaps served with spinach and lemon beurre blanc).

Other options on his regularly changing dinner menus might include seared Cleggan scallops with tomato and anchovy butter or roast rack of Connemara lamb with rosemary and garlic jus. Desserts are luscious creations such as dark chocolate mousse with passion fruit coulis, and the wine list provides a detailed tour of the globe.
