Review on Hayfield Manor, Orchids Restaurant
Situated in two acres of lovely grounds a mile or so from the centre of Cork, this prestigious family-owned hotel is also within striking distance of University College. The porticoed entrance and solid façade suggest history and heritage, although the building itself is quite modern.
The classically-styled Orchids restaurant offers fine French-inspired cuisine in a setting of corniced ceilings and ornate columns with views of the garden from some of its windows. The carte changes daily, but you might begin with foie gras and chicken ballotine with lychee and crabapple chutney or salmon ceviche with Belgian endive salad, ahead of a soup or sorbet.
Main courses highlight top-notch ingredients, witness milk-fed loin of veal, fillets of sea bass with caramelised salsify, sautéed sweet potatoes and cinnamon emulsion or roast cannon of lamb with baby leeks, turnip dauphinoise and Puy lentils. Finish with dark chocolate fondant with white chocolate sauce or cocktail profiteroles with light lemon mousse and strawberry foam.
Alternatively, opt for the smart-casual atmosphere and contemporary bistro food on offer in Perrotts, a conservatory-style venue at the front of the hotel. The Scally family also own Killarney Royal Hotel in Killarney, Co. Kerry.
