Review on Hotel Isaacs, Greenes Restaurant
Described as 'Cork's little gem', Isaacs Hotel & Apartments is a fixture of life in the city and has recently been upgraded with many additional bedrooms. Greene's restaurant is reach via an alluring courtyard garden complete with a highly distinctive waterfall (the perfect setting for a floodlit al fresco meal). Inside there are two dining areas with clean lines, exposed brickwork and views from big picture windows.
The kitchen works to an ambitious modern repertoire that fuses French and Mediterranean ideas with a few oriental touches. Grilled rare tuna on a crab risotto cake with wasabi mayonnaise makes an exciting starter, or you might opt for lamb's liver on hot butter toast with brandy and thyme cream. Main courses span everything from rack of lamb with a Dijon mustard and rosemary crust to marinated free-range chicken breast on roast sweet potato with lime and coconut sauce or baked sea bass with grilled fennel, smoked salmon zucchini and saffron potatoes.
Desserts round things off impressively with the likes of caramelised banana tarte fine or Amaretto and peach cheesecake with a vanilla smoothie. Excellent-value 'early bird' menus are highly popular with culture vultures attending the Everyman Palace Theatre across the road.
