Review on The Queens
A Grade II-listed Victorian drinkers’ den-cum-gin palace with serious architectural credentials, the Queen’s has been subjected to a stunning contemporary makeover of late. Much of the interior has been re-designed as a self-styled ‘dining room’: zinc planters with bay trees mark the entrance, the ornate plasterwork ceiling has been painted red and there’s a glistening open-to-view kitchen at the back.
The kitchen puts out a daily menu of conventional pub standards plus more fashionable gastro pub specialities. The old guard might opt for cod and chips with mushy peas or a cheeseburger; fashion-conscious types might feel more at ease ordering ham hock and smoked chicken terrine, halibut with borlotti beans, cabbage and broth or partridge with wilted gem lettuce and fondant potato. Desserts veer towards Euro-classics like banana pannacotta or white chocolate mousse. There are well-known real ales on draught, plus a short list of gluggable wines.
