Review on Numidie
There's a laid-back, bohemian feel and genuine character to this affable restaurant although the location may not be up to much, the place itself oozes colour and atmosphere with lots of ethnic artefacts dotted around the basement bar and ground-floor dining room.
Numidie takes its name from the ancient country that is now Algeria, and the food has a strong North African imprint. Here you will find authentic couscous kabyle, exotic tagines, merguez sausages and sfiyra (slow-cooked baby chicken in cinnamon and chickpea sauce with Algerian dumplings). Elsewhere, France and the Mediterranean have their say in the shape of courgette and Roquefort fritters with fig chutney, sea bass with fennel marmalade and crispy squid, and fillet of beef with truffle jus, quince and winter vegetable gratin.
Desserts stay true to the kitchen's ethos, offering crème brûlée and tarte au chocolat alongside poire fourée (stuffed pear with almonds and pistachios served with yoghurt). The wine list takes a more conventional view, with Europe as the main contender.
