Review on Ostlers Close
One of Scotland's hidden gems, tucked away in an alley close to the centre of Cupar, Ostlers Close Restaurant has been the pride and joy of husband and wife team Jimmy and Amanda Graham since 1981. A recent, stylishly refurbishment leaves the restaurant decorated in warm shades of red to create a relaxed and welcoming ambience.
Jimmy mans the stoves but finds time to source a splendid range of Scottish produce for his daily changing menus. He insists on the highest quality of ingredients and over the years has established an excellent network of local cottage industry suppliers with the same passion for quality and commitment which shows in the end product. What he can't get locally, he grows himself in the garden, along with the flowers that decorate the tables.
Seafood from Pittenweem Market shows up well on the menu in the shape of, say, roast fillet of cod with a haricot bean cassoulet and rouille potatoes. The region provides plentiful supplies of game in season which is given a new twist for example, Perthshire grouse served with a salmis of leg meat, roasted shallots and bacon.
Desserts provide an enticing mix of flavours and there is always a good selection of Scottish cheeses. Wine buffs are also in for a treat because the philosophy here is to offer 'an extensive, reasonably priced, wine list to encourage diners to drink good wine with good food'.
