Review on Barnard's Restaurant
There's a cosy intimacy about David and Sandie Barnard's likeable village restaurant, which has been a durable feature of the Hampshire scene for a good many years. Warm yellow colour schemes, exposed brick walls and floral prints create an appropriately domestic backdrop for food that follows a well-tried path.
Fresh ingredients are deployed judiciously, both on the carte and the good-value set menus. The choice of starters might include pan-fried scallops with lime and chilli dressing or warm salad of pigeon with pine nuts and bacon, before English lamb cutlets with a tartlet of minted pea purée or fillet of sea bass with sun-blush tomatoes, garlic and coriander sauce.
Bringing up the rear are familiar desserts like lemon posset with shortbread or chocolate tart with raspberry sorbet. The serviceable wine list has plenty of sound drinking at affordable prices.
