Review on Half Door

Given its location, on the tip of windswept peninsula deep in the south-west of Ireland, it's no surprise that Denis and Teresa O'Connor specialise in seafood. There's no shortage of prime fresh stuff from the waters of the Atlantic, and the kitchen puts the haul to good use.

All manner of daily specials supplement the regular menus; dishes are generally uncomplicated, with clear, natural flavours shining through. Lobsters are chosen direct from the tank before being given the Thermidor treatment, scallops are served with saffron sauce and mussels are steamed with garlic. Elsewhere, there are awesome seafood platters and a few contemporary ideas like blackened fillet of salmon with mango, plus some meaty alternatives in the form of – perhaps – roast rack of lamb with redcurrant sauce. Finish with fruit Pavlova or cheesecake.

The O'Connors have also spent time putting together an auspicious wine list that gives due prominence to the French regions but allows plenty of input from elsewhere; more than a dozen are available by the glass.
