Review on La Chouette
Fréderic Desmette has been ploughing his own furrow at La Chouette, a highly distinctive restaurant opposite the village green for more than ten years and continues to charm visitors with his special brand of classic cuisine. One Mobile Food Guide reporter summed it up when she noted: 'Wonderfully flavourful and honest food with attentive service from the patron.'
The building was once a pub and it still displays its ancestry with timbers, beams and gables, as well as pictures of eponymous owls ('chouettes'). Desmette is Belgian by birth and his food has a strong native slant, which shows up in everything from his Flemish way with asparagus to the fine chocolate used in many of the desserts.
Otherwise, it's mostly classic French bourgeois cuisine, along the lines of grilled scallops in saffron beurre blanc, gigot of lamb with spring vegetables or duck breast with green peppercorn sauce. The glorious wine list is 'as large as a small novel,' and has pages of fabulous Chablis, Châteauneuf-du-Pape and other French treasures. Fans of Belgian beers won't be disappointed, either.
