Review on The Empress Hotel
Right on the historic promenade overlooking Douglas Bay, this imposing Victorian hotel has been extensively upgraded over the years and now boasts up-to-the-minute facilities including a health club and sauna.
Meals are served in The Conservatory, which is reached via a spiral staircase from the ever-popular Piano Bar. The menu covers a lot of ground, with international favourites stealing most of the limelight: steamed Isle of Man mussels, braised lamb shank with mash, roast duckling with black cherry sauce and the like are bolstered by grills, pasta and a few more modern ideas like seared monkfish with sweet pepper and bacon cream, fondant potato and buttered leeks. Manx ice creams are alternatives to old-school desserts such as apple strudel, crème brûlée or chocolate and orange mousse.
