Review on The Mill Restaurant

A converted flax mill beside the shores of New Lake (a designated conservation area) is home to the Alcorn family's friendly guesthouse-cum-restaurant. The owner's grandfather was the renowned watercolourist Frank Eggington, and his paintings bedeck just about every room in the house.

Meals are served in a split-level, antique-filled dining room overlooking the water. Derek Alcorn changes his dinner menus every few weeks to take account of seasonal supplies and he puts the emphasis firmly on top-drawer local produce. Seafood is a strong suit: steamed Doe Castle mussels, grilled Greencastle lemon sole with wilted greens and pesto butter, and seared Cranford scallops with Horn Nead crab, leek risotto and shellfish tomato broth have all featured from time to time.

Alternatives might include chicken liver parfait with seared chicken livers and Crozier Blue ravioli or roast rack of lamb with boxty pancake while homespun desserts might range from lemon meringue pie to summer berry salad with strawberry parfait.
