Review on Rick Stein's Fish
Rick Stein's Fish & Chips in Falmouth is the latest addition to the celebrity chef's burgeoning empire of restaurants and shops and his first venture outside Padstow. The restaurant is light and airy with an informal atmosphere, tables are flanked with wooden benches and high bar style chairs by the window to take in the views of the harbour.
The menu is similar to its sibling restaurant in Padstow, with cod and haddock together with a variety of local fish like hake, monkfish, John Dory and bass in batter, deep fried in beef dripping to make it really crisp. They also serve roasted fish from their charcoal oven which gives a delicious barbecued flavour, together with homemade chips, curry sauce, mushy peas and their own mayonnaise-based tartare sauce, and not forgetting the chip butties! There are some nice wines and beers including their own Chalky's Bite and Chalky's Bark, brewed by Sharp's Brewery in Rock.
On the first floor is the Seafood Bar which opened in 2011 where you can expect a seafood tapas menu. Enjoy such things as scallops with guindillo peppers and chorizo, creamed leeks and smoked haddock on toast and a Cornish fish stew, whole roasted fish from the charcoal oven, as well as rib eye steaks. You can either sit at the bar and watch him cook while you eat, or book a table.
Steins Deli is on Discovery Quay where you can stock up on ingredients such as homemade mayonnaise, curry pastes, hummus and pesto, alongside quality produce like Tywardreath sausages, Maynards Farm bacon and Inverawe smoked salmon. There is also an assortment of freshly baked goods as well as a range of Rick Stein-branded products.
