Review on The Gables Restaurant
McCabes now comprises a serious wine merchants and go-ahead restaurant under one roof. The store holds a stock of more than 2000 wines (with particularly strong contingents from Bordeaux and Burgundy), and visitors who choose to eat can order any bottles they like at shop prices - plus a nominal €10 corkage charge. It's even possible to 'try before you buy'.
On the food front, the kitchen offers much more than workaday refreshment. Lunch is a lively menu of pastas, salads, eggs Benedict, steak sandwiches and dishes like Thai-style sea bass designed for a quick turnaround. Evening meals step up a few gears for more ambitious restaurant dishes such as confit of duck terrine with foie gras and pear chutney, free-range chicken breast with peperoni risotto, and West Coast salmon with leeks, shrimp and caper beurre blanc. Breakfast and brunch are also worth knowing about.
