Review on Camilaun Restaurant, Ardilaun House Hotel & Leisure Club
Successive members of the Ryan family have been custodians of this Victorian country manor since it opened as a hotel in 1962. The house stands in the leafy suburbs of Galway city and is approached via a tree-lined avenue through impeccably landscaped grounds.
The elegantly furnished Camilaun Room overlooks the gardens and provides a suitably smart backdrop to food with serious overtones. Starters on the elaborate carte might range from carpaccio of beef with ratatouille niçoise to ceviche of lemon sole spiked with ginger and chilli. A choice of soups and sorbets (try the ‘Buck’s Fizz’ version) arrive ahead of main courses such as salmon en papillote with tiger prawns and salsa verde or marinated lamb cutlets with coriander-infused couscous.
The extensive dessert menu covers everything from chocolate crème brûlée to coconut and Malibu parfait with caramelised pecan ice cream and praline mousse. Sunday lunch is a carvery.
