Review on Café Japan
'Not posh, but polished' is a typically snappy verdict on this great-value Japanese café. No-frills charm is part of its appeal, with a deli-style sushi counter out front, and regimented rows of utilitarian lacquered tables at the back.
Dazzlingly fresh sushi and sashimi is the reason why local Japanese make a beeline for the place. Mixed combos are a handy option for the uninitiated; otherwise explore delicacies such as salmon roe with shiso herb, slippery sea urchin with raw quail's egg, turbot fins, sea bass and various elite cuts of tuna. There are also monster hand rolls (the 'Californian' version includes avocado and salmon with mayo) and various cooked dishes like black cod in miso, grilled eel and salt-grilled salmon neck.
Drink saké, tea or Japanese beer and round things off in style with a glass of plum wine. Note that opening hours may vary and booking can sometimes be a problem. It's cash only at lunchtimes.
