Review on The Pig & Whistle
The Pig & Whistle is housed in a stone built pub located on the edge of the historic village of Cartmel, with its stunning views of the South Lakeland District fells. The venue has undergone a mild refurbishment retaining the charm of a traditional, welcoming pub sporting an open fire and a large south-facing garden to dine al fresco, while taking in the views of the surrounding countryside.
You can expect hearty Cumbrian fare, with the kitchen making excellent use of the local larder on its doorstep. Choose a starter of garlic king prawns with crusty bread in a sweet chilli sauce, follow on with a main course of braised daube of beef with Madeira jus and dauphinoise potatoes and veg or traditional beer battered fish and hand cut chips cooked in beef dripping with homemade tatare sauce and mushy peas. Desserts home in on the classics with a sticky toffee pudding with Cornish vanilla ice cream or a rhubarb crumble with custard.
There is a well-chosen wine list to complement the food together with an excellent selection of cask ales.
