Review on Lancrigg Vegetarian Country House Hotel
With its secret gardens, delightful woodland walks, unrivalled views and serene location, it's no surprise that Lancrigg was once a meeting place and pastoral bolthole for the Lakeland School of Poets. These days, it's an enchanting country house hotel, run with care and dedication by Robert and Janet Whittington.
Soft music and candlelight set the mood in the elegant Georgian dining room, where dinner has a colourful, eclectic flavour. A typical menu might kick off simple grilled Ulverston landed mackerel served with chervil potato salad and burnt lemon, followed by Ribble Valley Aberdeen Angus fillet steak with wild mushroom forcemeat, cavolo nero, fondant potato and forestiere sauce, and finishing with a fig and damson bakewell paired with orange custard.
During the day, you can call in for home-baked focaccia rolls, pizzas or a slice of Westmorland apple pie, while the supporting cast of organic wines, beers, juices and soft drinks does its job admirably at any time.
