Review on The Green Man at Lindsell
Handily placed just ten minutes drive from Stansted Airport at Mill End Green, Great Easton, The Green Man is a fifteenth-century country boozer that has seen vast expansion and rejuvenation. Many of its historic features (beams, standing timbers) have been saved, but the place now sports a stylish contemporary restaurant called the Sea Witch together with a fantastic garden and a spacious outdoor terrace for alfresco meals.
The kitchen cares about sourcing and 'ethical' supplies, buying much of its produce from farmers, growers and suppliers within a five-mile radius of the pub: in particular look for char-grilled beef from local butcher Mr Sweetland, and pork from Prior's Hall (which might be given the Wellington treatment).
Other intriguing possibilities might include pan-seared scallops with mackerel mousse and dressed rocket salad, confit lamb shank with with mint mash and red onion jus, and desserts including mixed citrus tart or banana and Baileys bavarois with summer fruit compote. Simpler pub grub is served in the bar, and the wide-ranging wine list keeps its prices in check.
