Review on The Maynard
A long-standing favourite with walkers, tourists and sightseers, the Maynard is a mightily impressive building set in glorious countryside in the Derbyshire Peak National Park. A recent refurbishment has transformed the restaurant into an elegant open-plan space with eye-catching etched-glass windows, sleek contemporary furniture and chrome accessories, plus paintings by local artists on the walls – and the ceiling!
The kitchen team has raised the bar with a challenging menu of classic and innovative dishes mostly based around locally sourced ingredients. To begin, there might be aubergine and Jerusalem artichoke terrine with red pepper and orange chutney, ahead of hot-smoked cod with beetroot confit and horseradish crème fraîche or whole poussin with lavender, lemon and thyme. Desserts give the nod to comforting local delicacies like Bakewell tart, Yorkshire parkin or sticky chocolate steamed pudding with chocolate fudge sauce.
