Review on The Old Ship
The Old Ship a run-down local boozer right next to Hackney Empire has been transformed by the Urban Inns group into a groovy new gastropub with the bonus of ten boutique bedrooms. The cosy lounge bar has a clubby atmosphere with gilt mirrors, chandeliers and comfy leather sofas, while the food is a Brit food-lover's dream.
The menu divides up into fascinating categories - 'land', 'sea', 'birds and wild food', 'pig', 'cow, 'pies' and so forth and there is a crusading dedication to sourcing and provenance. Much of the fruit comes from the Brogdale National Fruit Collection, fish is from the Devon day boats, game from Denham Estate and pork from farming champion Jimmy Butler in Suffolk.
The result is a full-blooded repertoire that follows the seasons for woodland mushroom and barley stew, scallops wrapped in bacon with pea mash, roast wood pigeon with haggis and bashed neeps, and devilled lamb's kidneys on soda bread. After that, treat yourself to poached saffron pear with vanilla cream or Bramley apple crumble. English beers and English wines wash it all down.
