Review on Cumberland Arms
Part of the gastro pub stable run very successfully by Richard and George Manners, this traditional, street-corner hostelry has been given the 'de rigueur' facelift with wood floors, mix-and-match furniture, prints on the walls and big vases of flowers all around.
The menu is pitched at a casual style of dining, with no obligation to have three courses and many dishes equally suitable as starters or light meals. The repertoire changes seasonally, but you can expect a cosmopolitan mixes of dishes from near and far.
Pea, broad bean and lemon risotto or grilled Italian sausages with sauté potatoes, winter greens and salsa verde rub shoulders with pheasant and merguez sausage tagine with quince and saffron or confit of duck spiced with star anise and served with smashed parsnips. You could finish with a plate of Italian cheeses, grilled bread and pears or something like Donald's chocolate and almond cake with vanilla cream. The short, globetrotting wine list also changes with the season.
