Review on The Skerries Restaurant, The Merkister Hotel
Standing in its own grounds overlooking Merkister Bay on the banks of Loch Harray, this family-run hotel is a Mecca for trout fishermen, It has everything the enthusiastic angler might need, from a private pier and jetty with boats to specialist tackle and a resident ghillie
Meals are served in Skerries Restaurant, which has breathtaking views of the loch and also the hills of Hoy: the sunsets have to be seen to be believed. As you might expect, trout from the loch finds its way onto the menu (perhaps turned into a mousse or grilled with anchovies and black butter). Steaks from Orkney Gold beef also get star billing, while other traditional stalwarts might include locally smoked salmon (cured 'to a secret recipe'), scallops Mornay, lobster Thermidor, and strips of chicken breast sautéed in brandy, cream and mushroom sauce. Sweets are from the trolley, and Orkney farm cheeses are served with oatcakes.
