Review on Hotel du Vin & Bistro
The classical Georgian façade of the old Brakspears Brewery in Henley town centre marks out the latest addition to the Hotel du Vin group. Every inch of the original building has been converted: two private dining rooms occupy the defunct fermentation room, while the malt house has been transformed into a billiard room.
Like other Hotel du Vin outlets, the menu follows a tried-and-tested formula, pitching 'Simple Classics' like French onion soup and coq au vin with buttered mash alongside modern European ideas such as spicy crab tian with chilli dressing, braised shank of venison on truffle mash, and fillet of sea bass with piperade and braised fennel.
Desserts are things like gooseberry fool with lime sherbet or prune and walnut tart with prune syrup, and the wine list is suitably impressive.
The hotel takes full advantage of its location - only 50 yards from the riverside moorings - by providing its own 'bateau du vin' - a skippered motor launch that is available for private hire.
