Review on The Old Queens Head
The Old Queens Head (OQH, for short) stands on the border between the lovely villages of Penn and Tylers Green, just a a stroll away from the ancient Chiltern beechwoods.
The dining room dates from 1666, but it's seen a lot of improvements over the years. Warm heritage fabrics, flagstones, cosy corners and real fires create just the right atmosphere, whether you are looking for a pint and a snack or a full three-course blow-out.
'Small plates' head the seasonal menu and you might opt for chestnut mushroom gnocchi with spring onion dressing or Little Marlow pigeon, pistachio and sherried raisin terrine with toasted OQH treacle soda bread. Stockings Farm near Amersham provides sausages and pork fillet (which might appear on fondant beetroot and celeriac with rhubarb compote and sage jus); otherwise full up with Catalonian fish stew with smoked bacon boudin.
The pudding menu majors in homespun offerings like chilled vanilla rice pudding with poached rhubarb and honey snap or warm chocolate brownie, and everything on the affordable, all-European wine list is available by the glass.
