Review on Magpies Restaurant

One of Lincolnshire's gems, this Magpie nests in a 200-year-old building which has recently undergone a stylish refurbishment, leaving it decorated in warm yellows and reds to create a comfortable and mellow ambience. Chef Andrew Gilbert makes good use of local produce for a menu that is full of unexpected touches, while front-of-house is masterminded by his wife Caroline.

Modern ideas abound on the menu, which works its way through mackerel pt with gravlax, soda bread and mango dressing or perhaps beetroot fritters in beer batter with baked goats' cheese and soured cream before fillet of Lincoln Red beef with sweet potato rsti, devilled kidneys and mustard sauce or corn-fed chicken breast on polenta with baked figs, Mozzarella and Serrano ham.

Finish with dark chocolate fondant and pistachio ice cream or something wacky like Jaffa cake pudding with Seville orange marmalade jelly and chocolate brownie ice cream. Lunch is an altogether simpler affair, and the impressive global wine list ranges from illustrious French vintages to wallet-friendly selections from elsewhere.

    No tablecloths

This is a very nice restaurant with a very talented chef,
The restaurant is nice but there were no tablecloths on Christmas day
This makes all the difference for a special occasion, such as Christmas Day., were they cutting costs? Hope not !
This is not your average Christmas Day lunchtime is special.

We have recently returned from France to live again in England. After 15 years in France we had become accustomed to eating in excellent restaurants. Here in Lincolnshire we were becoming quite disillusioned about eating out until, we visited The Magpies. It was for our 57th wedding anniversary .

From the warmth with which we were received to the excellence of the dishes we ordered, all was as we could have wished for.

There is an Anniversary dinner in May, and though they have a room to stay, the dining list is full. We are hoping for a cancellation so we can attend what I am sure will be a memorable occasion.

    Exceptional fine dining

The best food I have eaten in Lincolnshire possibly better than Cliveden in Berkshire,, . My son booked this for a belated 80th Birthday meal with my grand children as on my Actual birthday they were at school, we will certainly Be booking again. We all enjoyed everything placed before us.

I will hopefully be in for afternoon tea.
